Free shipping on every order

Shipping is free on all orders to the contiguous United States. There's no threshold to reach, so a 25-pack of replacement bulbs ships free, and so does a 1,000 ft. roofline kit. The price on the product page is the price of the product, and the only thing added at checkout is sales tax where it applies.

Lighting a house: where to start

Most homes are lit in three parts: the roofline, the trees and shrubs, and the walkway. Each uses a different product.

The roofline

C9 bulbs on socket wire are the standard for rooflines. Measure the gutter lines and peaks you want lit and add them up. A typical single-story ranch runs 100–200 ft.; a two-story home often runs 200–400 ft. The C9 installation kits start at 250 ft. and include the wire, bulbs, plugs and clips.

Trees and shrubs

LED mini light strands have 50 lights each and connect end to end. For bushes, one strand covers roughly a 2 ft. by 2 ft. shrub. For tree trunks, wrap at 4–6 in. between rows. Green wire hides in evergreens; brown wire works on bare trunks.

Walkways

8 in. light stakes hold C9 or C7 bulbs along a walkway or driveway edge. Space stakes to match the socket spacing on the wire.

Replacing bulbs

If a strand has a few dark bulbs, 25-packs of C9 LED bulbs match the E17 base on standard C9 socket wire. Match the color temperature on the old bulb's box: sun warm white, warm white, pure white or cool white, so the new bulbs don't stand out.

Why LED

LED C9 bulbs draw a small fraction of the power of incandescent C9 bulbs, which means many more bulbs can run on a single household circuit. The plastic lenses also hold up to ladders, wind and storage better than glass.

What a roofline display costs, with shipping included

Because shipping is free on every order, the product price is the whole cost before tax. Here's what typical homes come to using C9 installation kits, which include the socket wire, LED bulbs, plugs and clips:

  • Small single-story home, up to 250 ft. of roofline: the 250 ft. 12 in. spacing kit, $435.
  • Larger single-story or small two-story, up to 500 ft.: the 500 ft. 12 in. spacing kit, $935.
  • Add a photocell timer so the lights switch on at dusk: $11.
  • Add trees and shrubs: 6 in. LED mini strands from $14.50 each, or $260 for a case of 24.

Most homeowners only light the front-facing rooflines, which is usually well under the total roofline of the house. Measure what you'll actually light before choosing a kit.

Measuring your roofline

You don't need to get on the roof to measure. From the ground:

  1. Measure the length of each gutter line along the front of the house with a tape or a measuring wheel along the ground beneath it.
  2. For each sloped edge (the rake of a gable), measure the horizontal width and the height from gutter to peak, then estimate the slope length. A standard-pitch gable edge is roughly 1.1 to 1.2 times its horizontal distance.
  3. Add every edge you want lit, then add a few feet for each run's connection to the outlet.
  4. Choose the kit at or just above your total.

Leftover socket wire can be cut and finished with plugs for a garage, porch or fence line.

Choosing colors

The biggest look decision is color temperature. Sun warm white is the most amber and closest to classic incandescent bulbs. Warm white is a soft, traditional white and the most popular choice. Pure white is neutral and crisp. Cool white has a blue tint that some people like on modern homes. Multi-color and red-and-white patterns are available in several kits.

Pick one white for the whole house. Mixing warm and pure white across different rooflines is visible from the street.

Installing safely

  • Ladders: set the base on firm, level ground, extend it at least 3 ft. above the gutter if you're stepping onto a roof, and keep three points of contact.
  • Outlets: plug into GFCI-protected outdoor outlets, and don't run cords through closed windows or doors where they'll be pinched.
  • Clips, not nails: all-in-one clips hold the sockets to shingles and gutters without puncturing anything.
  • Weather: install on a dry, calm day. Wet shingles and wind make ladder work riskier.

Replacing bulbs

If you already have C9 lights and a few bulbs are out, a 25-pack of LED C9 bulbs is $19.95. Match the color temperature on your old packaging so the new bulbs don't stand out. LED retrofit bulbs screw into the same E17 sockets as old incandescent C9 bulbs.

Taking lights down and storing them

Take lights down on a dry day. Unclip each run, coil it loosely around your forearm or a piece of cardboard, and label it by location ("front gutter", "left gable"). Next year, each labeled run goes straight back to the same spot. Store in a dry bin; bulbs can stay in the sockets if runs are coiled loosely.

Why the price shown is the price you pay

There's no minimum order for free shipping. A single 100-pack of clips ships free the same as a full kit, so it's practical to order a missing piece on its own instead of padding an order to reach a threshold.

Questions

Is there really no minimum for free shipping?

No minimum. A single pack of clips ships free, and so does a 1,000 ft. roofline kit.

How much does it cost to light a typical house?

A small single-story front usually fits the 250 ft. kit and a larger single-story the 500 ft. kit; the current prices are listed in the pricing table above. Add a photocell timer and a few mini light strands for shrubs if you want them.

Can I install C9 lights myself?

Yes. C9 kits use clips that slide onto shingles and gutters with no tools or nails. Use a sturdy ladder on level ground, plug into GFCI-protected outdoor outlets, and install on a dry, calm day.

Warm white or pure white?

Warm white is the soft, traditional look most homes use. Pure white is crisper and more modern. Sun warm white is the most amber, closest to old incandescent bulbs. Pick one for the whole house.

Will LED C9 bulbs fit my old light strings?

LED C9 bulbs use the standard E17 intermediate base, the same as incandescent C9 bulbs, so they screw into existing C9 sockets.

How do I store lights so they're easy to put up next year?

Coil each run loosely and label it by where it goes. Next year each labeled run goes back to the same spot, which turns re-installing into a much shorter job.

Is shipping really free with no minimum?

Yes. Shipping is free on all orders to the contiguous United States, whatever the order total.

What size kit do I need for my house?

Add up the length of every roofline and peak you want lit. Single-story homes often run 100–200 ft. and two-story homes 200–400 ft. Choose the kit at or just above your total.

When will my order ship?

Every order ships the same day it's placed, whatever time you order. There's no cutoff.

What's the difference between C9 and C7 bulbs?

C9 bulbs are the larger of the two, about 1⅛ in. across on an E17 intermediate base, and are the standard for rooflines and commercial displays viewed from the street. C7 bulbs are smaller, on an E12 candelabra base, and suit close-viewed spaces like porches, railings and walkways.

How many bulbs do I need for a roofline?

Convert the run length to inches and divide by the socket spacing. A 100 ft. roofline is 1,200 in.; at 12 in. spacing that's 100 sockets and 100 bulbs, and at 15 in. spacing it's 80.

Should I choose 12 in. or 15 in. spacing?

12 in. spacing gives a tighter, brighter line and is common on single-story homes and anything viewed up close. 15 in. spacing uses about 20% fewer bulbs for the same footage and is common on larger homes and commercial rooflines viewed from a distance.

What's in a C9 installation kit?

Kits combine C9 socket wire at the listed length and spacing with LED C9 bulbs to fill the sockets, slide-on plugs to finish the runs and clips to mount them. The options list on each kit shows the bulb colors and clip mix available.

Which clip do I need?

All-in-one clips fit shingles and gutters. Ridge clips mount along roof peaks. Tile and extended fascia clips are for tile roofs and deep fascia boards. Magnet clips hold to metal surfaces, and light stakes place C9 or C7 bulbs along walkways and beds.
